Stop Saving Your Favorite Clothes for Someday: 5 Ways to Wear More of What You Own
Have you ever looked through your closet and discovered something you completely forgot you owned? Maybe it's a beautiful blouse you purchased months ago, a jacket you loved in the store, or a pair of pants that still has the tags attached.
Sound familiar?
You're certainly not alone! Many women have wonderful pieces in their closets that rarely see the light of day.
Sometimes we're saving them for a special occasion. Other times, we're not quite sure what to wear with them. And often, we simply reach for the same familiar outfits because they're easy.
But here's something I encourage my clients to remember:
Your favorite clothes deserve to be worn, not just admired on a hanger!
As a personal wardrobe stylist, I love helping women rediscover what they already own and find fresh ways to wear those pieces.

Here are five simple ways to start enjoying more of your wardrobe.
1. Stop Waiting for the Perfect Occasion

We all have those pieces we're saving for something special.
Maybe it's a beautiful blouse that feels a little too dressy for everyday wear or a jacket you've been waiting for the right event to wear.
My suggestion? Create the occasion!
Pair that beautiful blouse with your favorite jeans for lunch with a friend. Wear your special jacket over a simple T-shirt for an elevated everyday look.
You don't always need a special event to wear something that makes you feel wonderful.
Sometimes getting dressed is the occasion.
2. Challenge Yourself to Wear Something Different
Here's a little style challenge I love!

We all tend to gravitate toward the same familiar outfits. But sometimes, stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to discovering a look you absolutely love!
This week, challenge yourself to try something a little different.
Maybe it's pairing two colors you've never worn together, mixing a pattern with something unexpected, or styling a favorite piece in a completely new way.
Have a bold print you've been hesitant to wear? Try pairing it with a simple neutral top. Or take that dressy blouse you usually save for special occasions and wear it with your favorite jeans.
You don't have to completely change your style. Sometimes one small change can make an outfit feel fresh and exciting!
Here's another fun idea: Once you've created an outfit you love, take a quick picture of yourself wearing it.
Save it in an album on your phone called "Outfit Inspiration."
The next time you're standing in front of your closet wondering what to wear, you'll have a collection of outfits ready to inspire you.
It's like creating your own personal look book using clothing you already own!

3. Think in Outfits, Not Individual Pieces

One of the biggest reasons clothing goes unworn is that we purchase individual pieces without considering how they'll work with the rest of our wardrobe.
A beautiful top is wonderful, but if you can't figure out what to wear with it, it may spend more time hanging in your closet than being worn.
When you're getting dressed or shopping for something new, try thinking in complete outfits.
For example, take one pair of trousers and consider how you could wear them three different ways:
For work: Add a blouse, structured jacket, and loafers.
For the weekend: Pair them with a casual sweater and sneakers.
For dinner: Switch to a dressier top, ankle boots, and a favorite accessory.
One piece. Three different looks.
This is where the magic of mixing and matching really happens!
4. Let Your Accessories Do Some of the Work
Sometimes you don't need another outfit. You just need a different way to style the one you already have.

A colorful scarf, statement necklace, interesting belt, or different pair of shoes can completely change the feel of an outfit.
Take a simple combination of jeans and a neutral sweater.
Add sneakers and a crossbody bag for a casual afternoon.
Switch to ankle boots, a necklace, and a structured handbag, and suddenly that same outfit feels a little more polished.
Small styling changes can make a big difference without requiring you to purchase anything new.
5. Shop Your Own Closet Before Shopping for Something New
Have you ever gone shopping for something new, only to realize later that you already had something similar hanging in your closet?
It happens more often than you might think!
Before heading to your favorite boutique or browsing online, take a few minutes to explore what you already own.

Maybe you're looking for a new outfit for an upcoming event, something fresh for work, or just a little change to your everyday style.
Start by asking yourself a few questions:
Do I already own something that could work for this occasion?
Could I create a similar look by pairing pieces differently?
Is there something missing from my wardrobe that would help me wear more of what I already have?
Here's a styling tip I love sharing with my clients: Make a wardrobe wish list!
Instead of buying something simply because it catches your eye, keep a running list of pieces that would complement your existing wardrobe.
Maybe it's a versatile jacket, a pair of shoes that works with several outfits, or a colorful top that coordinates with your favorite pants.
This way, when you do shop, you're shopping with a purpose rather than adding another piece that may never get worn.
Remember, building a wardrobe you love isn't about having more clothes. It's about making thoughtful choices that give you more ways to wear what you already own.
How to Wear More of Your Clothes with a Fresh Perspective
Sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective, a little creativity, and the willingness to experiment with different combinations.
My encouragement to you? Have fun with your wardrobe! Try something new, wear those pieces you've been saving, and enjoy discovering fresh ways to style what you already own.
You might just discover a new favorite outfit without spending a dime!
